Abstract

585,240. Radial flow turbines. THOMAS, D. W. Sept. 11, 1944, No. 20840. Divided out of 585,229. [Class 110 (iii)] A triple expansion turbine comprises three concentric rotors held between a pair of side plates and having channels for the working fluid, which may be steam, water, or air. The innermost rotor is the H.P. and the outermost the L.P. and the fluid passes from one rotor to another through suitable holes or passages in the circumferential dividing walls. The channels in the intermediate rotor are curved oppositely to those in the other rotors. Fluid enters at P and passes through a pedestal F<*>, around shaft D, and through a valve V to flow successively through spiral channels in the high pressure stages A ; thence through passage S<1> and valve V<2> to intermediate stages B ; and thence through passage S<3> and valve V<5> to low pressure stages C, finally exhausting at R. Valves V, V and V are held in the open position by the fluid to obstruct the corresponding passages S, S<2> and R* respectively. Reversal is obtained by admitting fluid at P<*>so that the rotor channels are traversed in reverse sequence. Valves V<1>, V<3> and V<4> are then opened by the fluid, to obstruct the corresponding passages S<1>, S<3>, and R respectively. Exhaust takes place through R<*>.
