Abstract
585,237. Rod cutters. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., NORTH, J. D., and CLARK, B. F. Oct. 13, 1944, No. 19745. [Class 61 (ii)] A tool for cutting off portions of screws or the like projecting from a surface comprises a locating boss 35 adapted to engage the end of the screw or the like to be cut, two or more cutting-wheels 31 carried by a support rotatable with or about the boss and means operable upon rotation of the support to force the cutting-wheels into the screw or the like. A sleeve pinion 15 mounted on a fixed shaft 16 is adapted tn be rotated from a handle 12 by a pinion 6 and drives a block 19 through dogs 18. Cranked levers 26 are pivoted to the lower end of a block 24 in screwthreaded engagement with the end of the shaft 16. The upper ends of the levers are connected by links 27 to the block 19 whilst the lower ends carry the cutting discs 31. The locating boss 35 at the lower end of the block 24 may be integral therewith, as shown, or may be rotatable relative thereto, in which case it will remain stationary during the cutting operation. As the block 19 is rotated, the discs 31 travel around the screw to be cut and are gradually moved inwards due to the screwing movement of the block 24 along the shaft 16. Instead of hand operation, the tool may be driven by an electric or other suitable motor. According to the Provisional Specification, the bell-crank levers may be operated by a yoke on a ring carried by a stationary threaded boss along which it moves when the locating boss is rotated. The ring may pass a dead-centre position so that the wheels move together to sever the screw and then move apart again, the tool being operated in the reverse direction at the next screw to be cut. Alternatively, if the tool is driven by an electric motor, a switch may be provided to reverse the direction at the end of each cutting operation so that the wheels aro returned to the starting position.
