Abstract

583,084. Controlling change-speed gearing. NORTON MOTORS, Ltd., and SHARRATT, F. R. Aug. 18, 1944, No. 15819. [Class 80 (ii)] Comprises an auxiliary neutral-finding lever 24 for the motor-cycle change-speed control described in Specification 424,154, wherein a foot- or hand-operated shift-lever, Fig. 1 (not shown) splined on a sleeve 10 which is freelymounted on a speed-selector spindle 20, operates the spindle stepwise in either direction through a ratchet-plate 19, secured to the spindle, and two oppositely-acting pawls 17, pivoted on an arm 13 secured to the sleeve 10 of the shiftlever, which latter is returned to the central position after each shift by a double-armed hairpin spring 14. The auxiliary neutralizing lever 24 has two spaced pegs 26, which, when the lever is raised, against spring-resistance, engage one or other of two inclined surfaces on the ratchet plate 19 to move the latter direct to the neutral from any gear position, the upper edge of the lever 24 lifting the pawls 17 off the ratchet plate during such movement.
