Abstract

A thermosetting moulding powder consists of a rapid thermosetting synthetic urea or phenol formaldehyde resin and a fibre-forming polyamide, and is preferably produced by mixing the ingredients on at least one pair of mixing rolls, the latter operating at differing speeds and one of said rolls being maintained at 80-150 DEG C., the other being chilled, so that the mixing takes place at temperatures of the mixed material below the thermosetting temperature thereof, the product being then sheeted off, cooled and ground. A potentially rapid thermosetting resin is defined as one which will cure in less than five minutes when moulded as a finished moulding powder to a thickness of 1/8 " at 1/4 to 3 tons per square inch pressure and at 140-180 DEG C. Comparative figures are given for the properties of moulding powders consisting of a phenolic resin mixed with wood-flour, ground cotton, acetate rayon, mica or polyamide in the proportions 1 : 1, 1 : 1, 1 : 1, 2 : 1 and 3 : 2 respectively, and any of these fillers other than the polyamide may be used with the polyamide, e.g. for the manufacture of articles such as snap lids or switch parts. Stearic acid, water or dibutyl phthalate may be added during the mixing, and the polyamide may be in the form of waste fibres.
