Abstract

582,698. Tempering and attaching soles. B. B. CHEMICAL CO., Ltd., (B.B. Chemical Co., and United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Sept. 21, 1944, Nos. 18014/44 and 9355/45. Addition to 567,076. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] In the method of simultaneously tempering and activating cement-coated soles described in the parent Specification, the character of the hot, vapour-laden atmosphere is controlled so that its temperature is in the range of 140‹F. to 206‹F., its relative humidity is 50 to 100 per cent., and its heat content in the range of 200 to 700 B.T.U.s per pound of dry air. For this purpose, the tempering cabinet is provided with an air inlet pipe above the water level by which additional air, which may be heated, may be injected into the atmosphere. In a further modification of the apparatus described in the parent Specification, the cabinet is associated with a turrettype sole-attaching machine which operates means for ejecting treated soles one at a time from the cabinet and means for supplying shoes to the loading station of the machine. As shown in Fig. 1 (18014/44), the additional air pipe 118, perforated on its upper side, is arranged beneath the perforated baffle plate 116 and is supplied with air from a coil 126 immersed in an oil bath 128 with an electric heater 132 and thermostat 134. The air supply pipes 150 are only partially immersed in the water 152 and are perforated on their under side. The water heater 144 is controlled by a thermostat 142, and a thermometer 114 is provided in the treatment space 100, in which the soles, inserted through a side opening, are supported on edge by partitions and wires: In a modification described in the second Provisional Specification, the volume of water held in the cabinet is reduced by providing a restricted sump 104, Fig. 3, in which the electric heater is arranged, the air pipes 100 being partially immersed in the water. The additional air pipe 92 is arranged above a system - of two imperforate baffles 122, 126 and a perforated baffle 130. The soles are inserted into the treatment space through slots in the front wall masked by a slitted canvas screen, and are supported in a basket 60, 62, 64, 66 formed of non-heat conducting material. The heel ends of the soles adjacent the entry slots are supported on wire gauze 78. The basket provides separate compartments for four soles and each compartment is provided with a pusher 184 for ejecting the soles automatically through the slots after treatment. The cabinet is associated with a turret-type heel attaching machine, for example such as is described in Specification 408,953, the cylinders 12 of which are shown in Fig. 1. Between each pair of cylinders is fixed a cam 251-254<1>. The cams are arranged, as the turret is indexed, to engage in turn a roll 256 on a lever 258, Fig. 3, carrying a pawl 262 for operating a ratchet wheel 232. The latter is fast on a shaft 224 carrying double-armed fingers 241' which operate in sequence on the appropriate one of four levers 201 connected to the pushers 184. The turret also carries rolls 282 which operate a star wheel 286 intermittently to rotate a table 14 provided with trays 32 for shoes. The mechanism is so arranged that a left pad and left shoe and a right pad and right shoe arrive alternately at the operator's station E, an appropriate treated sole being ejected from the cabinet at the same time. The' operator replenishes the cabinet and shoe tray as necessary to ensure the correct length of tratment of the soles in the cabinet. The supports for the cams 251 &c. may be so marked that the operator knows which type of shoe will arrive next at the station E. The cabinet has a chimney with a damper 50, and water is supplied to the sump by a pump by way of a restricted inlet and an overflow arrangement, so that a constant level is maintained in the sump. The pump and an air pump are mounted in the base of the machine.
