582,428. Inserting tubular rivets. DOWDLE, D. R. Dec. 2, 1943, No. 20121. [Class 43] A riveting tool of the type in which tubular rivets are threaded on a central rod has jaws which are opened against spring pressure solely by the contact of the rivets in the forward movement of the rivet carrying rod, and a hand lever and a rack and pinion for operating a piston connected to the rod. As shown, the member 6 is slidably fitted within a tubular member 5 secured in casing 1. It is normally urged forward by a coiled spring 7 against which it can be retracted by means of the handle lever 9 connected to a spindle 10, provided with teeth 12 meshing with teeth 13 in the underside of the piston member 6. The latter has an axial hole 16 through which passes the central rivet-carrying rod 17. The rear end of this rod is clamped to the piston by means of a split collet 18 tightened on the rod by a clamping member 24. The forward end of the tube 5 carries a head-piece 28 into which a nose or chuck member 29 is screwed. Jaws 30, which are fitted into a slot in the nose, are opened by the contact of the rivets 31 'as the rod 17 is moved forward and close automatically behind the flange of the rivet under the pressure of springs 38 to form a rigid anvil surface 35 against which the foremost rivet is held while it is being expanded by the mandrel head 44 of the rod 17. A feeding spring 42 feeds' the rivets forwardly along the rod 17. This rod can be completely withdrawn through the jaws when the clamping member 24 is released. A curved or straight extension fitting, Fig. 8, may be provided for use in awkward positions. Each fitting has a screwthreaded end 48 which is screwed into the head 28 after the chuck member 29 has been removed, and chuck fittings similar to the members 29 at the other end.
