Abstract
582,281. Electric insulating compositions. AEROVOX CORPORATION. March 5, 1943, No. 3625. Convention date, July 7, 1942. Drawings to Specification. [Class 140] A dielectric composition for impregnating cellulosic elements of electric condensers comprises castor oil or glycerol triricinoleate which is liquid at room temperature and has been purified by treatment with a bleaching clay (e.g., fuller's earth) or an activated clay or activated carbon and is substantially devoid of free fatty acid. The castor oil may contain less than 0.4 per cent. and as little as 0.01 per cent. free acid calculated as oleic acid. Adsorbents specified are fuller's earth, bentonite, activated clays, and activated carbons. Adsorbent treatment may be performed either on commercial castor oil containing free fatty acid or on castor oil from which free acid has been either completely or partially removed. The purified castor oil has much bigger resistivity and an improved power factor. Wound condenser sectors may be dried at 250‹F under a vacuum of aproximately 200 microns mercury, and the impregnating oil run in through clean conduits while maintaining a vacuum of 400 microns or better. The sections are allowed to remain in oil for several hours at 180‹F. under a vacuum of approximately 100 microns, and after breaking the vacuum the sections are sealed in metal containers filled with fresh oil. Specification 581,483, [Group III], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of a member of the class including fatty acid esters and mixtures thereof such as vegetable oils and waxes and derivatives of each of the alternatives, the material being largely or substantially wholly free of some or all of those electrically deleterious constituents normally present in commercial chemically pure products, the constituents including free fatty acid and impurities removable by adsorption. Vegetable, animal, and synthetic oils, fats, and waxes, and derivatives such as acetylated and hydrogenated fatty esters and also derivatives such as ketones are referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
