Abstract

Ethylene and an organic vinyl ester are interpolymerized, the proportion and condition of polymerization being such that the molar ratio of ethylene to vinyl esters in the interpolymer is less than 5 to 1 and greater than 1 to 32. Polymerization is effected by the action of heat and/or light. Catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl or lauroyl peroxides ammonium, sodium and potassium persulphates, and alkali metal perborates, water and dispersing agents may be present. Dispersing agents specified are sodium cetyl sulphate, the sodium salt of sulphonated white oil or the sodium salt of an isopropyl naphthalene sulphonic acid formaldehyde condensation product. Water may be wholly or partly replaced by benzene, dioxane, isooctane, methanol or ethanol. Vinyl esters specified are vinyl acetate, formate, propionate, n-butyrate, chloroacetate, diethyl-acetate, -isobutyrate, -isocaproate, -benzoate, 2,4 - dimethylpentanoate, laurate, trimethyl - acetate, tert-butyl acetate thiolacetate. A third polymerizable monomer may be present, e.g. 1,1-dichlorethylene, tetrafluorethylene, acrylic and methacrylic acids, amides, esters and nitriles, maleic anhydride, fumaric and maleic acids, esters and amides, methyl and propyl vinyl ethers and methyl and ethyl vinyl ketones. Sulphites and hydrosulphites acting as polymerization accelerators, granulating agents, lubricants, coagulants, fillers and dyes may be added. The interpolymer may be isolated by removing ammonium vinyl acetate by boiling off at atmospheric or reduced pressure, by passage of a current of air or by washing the product on a filter, in a centrifuge or on a rubber mill. The interpolymer may be hydrolysed. Specification 497,643 is referred to.
