Abstract

Finely divided carbon is obtained by passing carbon monoxide over an iron catalyst at 750-1100 DEG C and preferably 850-900 DEG C. The catalyst is preferably superficially oxidised mild steel wire. The product is purified from iron by heating in a stream of chlorine or by extraction with acid.
