Abstract

581,498. Ventilating buildings. JOHNSON, E. G. June 9, 1944, No. 11105. [Class 137] [Also in Groups XI and XXXV] Air in a horticultural house or the like is maintained between a higher and a lower temperature by an electric fan 15 circulating air over electric heaters 18 on operation of a thermostat at the lower temperature, and when the higher temperature is reached, a second thermostat opens a valve so that the fan draws in and circulates air from the outside, the heater being switched off. Each thermostat has a lag in operation so that it opens and closes at slightly different temperatures. No circulation or heating of air or admission of fresh air takes place between the two temperatures, e.g., 65'-75'F. The air heaters comprising resistance heaters 18 with pins 19 are connected in parallel to terminals 20 and are held by rods 17 below a panel 16 with perforations 23. A motor 13 above panel 16 drives through a shaft 14 a fan 15 below the panel. The roof 10 of the cloche has an opening 12 leading to a duct 11 in which is mounted the motor having ventilation apertures 22 so that fresh air may be drawn through it. A slide valve 24 with apertures 25 is mounted on the lower side of the panel 16 and is moved by a solenoid 27 against a spring 34 so that on operation of a thermostatic switch 33 at the higher temperature, the perforations 23, 25 register and fresh air is drawn in by the fan. The thermostat acts through a cable 28 and a rod 26. When fresh air enters, a ventilator at the lower part of the cloche may be opened by the thermostat 33 to allow air to escape. Air is drawn in centrally and is dispersed sideways. When the temperature falls below 75' the current is cut off and the spring 34 moves the slide 24 so that the apertures no longer register. When the temperature falls below 65', the thermostat 32 switches on the fan and heaters 18. The thermostats are connected in parallel, as shown in Fig. 4. Specification 435,496 is referred to.
