Abstract
Preparing an aqueous slurry of a rutile pigment and precipitating in situ within the slurry a water-insoluble white silicate by the reaction between an alkali silicate and a water-soluble metal compound the silicate of which is white and water-insoluble; the slurry being maintained at a temperature of between 60 DEG C. and 80 DEG C. during the precipitation of the insoluble silicate. The preferred amount of precipitated silicate is between a fraction of one per cent. and ten per cent. by weight. The water-insoluble white silicates preferred are those of metals of the second, third and fourth groups of the Periodic System. Examples given are magnesium, zinc, aluminium, Ythrium, zirconium and cerium silicates. Specifications 513,867, 523,148, and 580,809 are referred to.
