Abstract

580,631. Two-stroke engines. FISHER, R. J. July 14, 1944, No. 13476. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine in which a precompressed charge from the crank chamber or a precompression pump enters the cylinder through an admission port arranged in the piston head and controlled by a valve 15 which is free to move between its seat and an abutment 19, subject solely to the pressure difference on its two sides, except for the inertia force of the valve itself, means is provided which exerts an axial thrust in opposition to this inertia force when the piston is near the bottom of its stroke. This means may comprise a light spring 20 or pivoted levers connected to a counter-balancing weight mounted in the piston. A conical surface 21 on the piston approaches closely the cylinder head 22 and restricts the combustion chamber to a chamber surrounded by a conical surface 12 which also guides the entering charge. This charge may be whirled by helical vanes radiating from, and supporting, a boss 17 which guides the valve stem. The valve may alternatively comprise a flat plate which may be a disc, or annular, and is guided on helical ribs extending from the conical surface 12. Stops may comprise studs in the piston head or a split ring accommodated in the groove. As shown in Fig. 1, the invention is applied to an engine having crank case compression, but the charge may be compressed outside the crankcase delivered through registered ports in the cylinder and piston and a chamber in the piston. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the valve 35 is annular and surrounds a conical boss 34 on the piston and has a conical seating therewith. It may extend to the width of the cylinder bore and is counterbalanced by a weight 38, acting through levers 40.
