['Class 103 (iii)] A sanding device, particularly for rail vehicles, comprises a sand box 22, Fig. 1, connected to a blow chamber 10 by a slot 13 adjustable in width and accessible through a removable cover on the chamber. Compressed air is admitted to one end of the chamber 10 from a reservoir 1, pipe 2, control valve 3, which may be electropneumatically operated, and pipes 4, 5, and blows the sand through the exit pipe 7 on to the wheel tracks. The end of the pipe 7 may be covered with a sleeve and is closed by a valve 8 bearing on two projections on the end of the pipe to prevent freezing thereto and is provided with a balance weight 24 which is edged to cut through snow. An agitator 27 may be provided in the hopper together with grates 26 the bars of which cross each other. In Fig. 4 the slot 13 between the hopper 22 and blow chamber 10 is adjustable in width by means of a slidable plate 14 accessible through the cover 12 and the edge of the plate or slot may be shaped to provide a gradual cut-off. In Fig. 9 a rotatable sleeve 31 provides the means for varying the width of the slot by an irregular gap 33, 34. The end of the compressed air pipe in the chamber 10 may be covered by a valve pivoted to the pipe or chamber with or without an adjustable stop and provided with a leaf spring to absorb the shock when blown open.
