Abstract

580,137. Coating non-metals with metals. KODAK, Ltd. May 22, 1944, No. 9878. Convention date, July 3, 1943. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] In a method of forming a reflective coating on a surface, successive layers of a reflective material are deposited thereon by thermal evaporation in a partial vacuum, the vacuum being broken after the application of each layer to allow air to oxidise it and then reformed after the oxidation before forming the next layer. As shown applied to the formation of an aluminium mirror on glass supports each glass 11 is cleaned and placed on an apertured support 12 under a bell 15 and the pressure reduced to .1 mm. of mercury. A glow discharge is passed between the electrodes 17 and 18 to prepare the surface for the coating. The pressure is then further reduced to .0005 mm. of mercury and current supplied to a filament 14 the heat of which evaporates pieces of aluminium 25 which condense on the prepared glass surfaces. When sufficient aluminium has been deposited air is admitted through the cock 23 to oxidise the aluminium layer. Each glass support is then removed from the bell jar, held under a stream of cold water to harden the layer and rubbed with a soft cloth to smooth the surface and remove any particles of dust which would cause pin holes in the layer. The process is then repeated to give one or more further hardened oxidised layers, the completed reflective surface being entirely free from pin holes. A clean pilot glass is observed during each application so that each layer may be of approximately the same thickness.
