Abstract

580,111. Controlling motor vehicles. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. (Bendix- Westinghouse Automotive Air Brake Co.). April 7, 1944, No. 6524. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a braking-system for vehicles, the movement of the accelerator to close the throttle causes the operation of electro-pneumatic means which produce a partial application of the brakes, and subsequent operation of the brake pedal renders the electropneumatic means ineffective. As shown, the accelerator pedal 16 controls' a selflapping valve 15 and, when depressed, admits air to the cylinder 6 and opens the throttle 5. The pressure in the branch pipe 90 of the pipe 14 depresses the rod 91 and moves a contact arm 70 against the contact 69, the frictional pivot 72 retaining the arm in a set position. The contacts 69, 70 are in circuit with a magnet valve 36 and fluid pressure valve 55, the contacts 59, 62 of the latter being kept open by pressure in the branch pipe 68, and being allowed to close when, on raising of the pedal 16, the pipe 14 and cylinder 16 are vented through the pipe 17. When the accelerator moves to close the throttle 5, the magnet valve circuit is closed and the valve 42 is moved to admit air from the reservoir 11 through a reducing- valve 51, pipes 49, 48, valve 30 and pipe 28 to the brake cylinders 18. The valve 30 comprises a sliding valve member 35, which, when full reservoir pressure is admitted by the depression of the brake pedal 22 is forced up to close the port 32 and to establish connection between the pipes 26, 28. At the same time, the branch pipe 86 supplies air to the cylinder 82 and moves the arm 70 to break the contacts 69, 70, the auxiliary braking-means being thus rendered ineffective when the accelerator is again depressed to open the throttle. A partial brake application is indicated by a light 103 controlled by a valve 107 of construction similar to the valve 55. A full brake application is indicated by a lamp 92 controlled by a switch 93 responsive to the air pressure admitted to the brake cylinders.
