[Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Groups II and XIII] In a ball mill, rotary kiln, dryer or like apparatus comprising a cylindrical shell mounted to rotate about its longitudinal axis on slide shoes, rollers and the like and driven through a toothed gear ring surrounding and secured to its outer surface the gear teeth and a smooth surface riding on the supports are formed in a single annular member which, with the supports, is enclosed within a casing which extends round the shell. The shell 10 is encircled in the middle by an annular member having a smooth surface 27 lying between two rings of teeth 28, which may be of the spur or helical type, and running on the slide shoes or rollers (not shown). Two balanced pinions 36, which can be carried on a single shaft supported in a self-aligning bearing, mesh with teeth 28 to rotate the container 10, the whole being enclosed within the stationary casing 49. A small bearing 17 is provided, as shown, to prevent tilting. In a modification one gear ring only is provided.
