Abstract

579,797. Spinning flax. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P. Dec. 29, 1944, No. 26111. [Class 120 (iii)] A process for the wet-spinning of flax consists in preparing a roving which is boiled, preferably in alkaline solution, e.g. soda ash or caustic soda, and using the boiled roving on a ring-spinning frame, the roving being formed of the slivers coming from two delivery rollers of the roving frame, wound on a single spindle to constitute a double roving, which, after boiling and drying, is made into a suitable package for use on the ring frame. The rovings may be formed into hanks or skeins before the boiling treatment which treatment may be carried on until, when dry, they have lost between 10-18 per cent. of their original mass due to the pectins &c. removed by the boiling. In an example, the alkaline solution contains 17¢ per cent. caustic soda based on the dry weight of the roving which is boiled therein for 3¢ hours. The process is stated to provide for an increase of 50-100 per cent. in bobbin size spun at a much higher speed. Specification 579,793 is referred to.
