Abstract

579,635. Fluxes. ROLLASON, E. C., and MUREX WELDING PROCESSES, Ltd. June 23, 1944, No. 11951. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Non-ferrous welding electrodes are made by coating the core with a layer of composition comprising one or more fluxes which are thereafter sintered. A portion of the composition fuses at a lower temperature than the remainder, the low melting portion being preferably a minor fraction of the total. Two or more fluxes of ditferent melting points may be used and the composition may include one or more substances of lower melting point which act as bonding agents, or two or more of the ingredients may form a low melting point eutectic. Lithium chloride may be used as a binder for a coating on an aluminium electrode. Sintering may be effected within the range 400‹ C. to 1000‹ C. The core may be provided with a helical winding of wire to serve as a reinforcement or to add alloying material to the weld. The core may be of aluminium or alloy thereof or of copper. One composition for an electrode of aluminium or alloy thereof and which is sintered for 5 to 15 minutes at a temperature of 600‹ C. which is above the melting point of the completely fused constituents, consists of 25-50 parts of NaCl, 55-28 parts of KCI, 5-78 parts of LiF and 5-20 parts of Na3AlF6 and 1-15 parts of LiCl.
