Abstract

579,205. Projectiles. BRIDGE, J. F., and HATFIELD, E. M., and WILLIAMS DEACONS BANK, Ltd., (Representatives of HATFIELD, W. H.), and SHAW, W. Nov. 27, 1942, No. 16918. [Class 9 (i)] [Also in Groups II and XXII] An armour-piercing, projectile comprises a body portion formed wholly or mainly of a sintered alloy comprising carbides of tungsten, tantalum, titanium, molybdenum, chromium, or vanadium, or a mixture of two or more of such carbides bonded'by a metal or alloy of lower melting point, such as cobalt, nickel, or iron, and a nose-cap of steel or similar hard metallic carbide, or a combination of both. The nose may be solid or hollow and is soldered to the body 20. The projectile may have a metal casing. The nose-cap may be formed in two parts 21, 22, one part of steel and the other of carbide, and the parts may be interfitting, or the outer part provided with a skirt to overlap the inner part to which it is soldered. Other constructional examples are shown.
