Abstract
579,120. Internal-combustion engines. PURDAY, H. F. P., PARKER, R. D., and REBBECK, F. E. Jan. 14, 1939, No. 1354. [Class 7 (ii)] In order to prevent excessive vibration in marine plant, the internal combustion engine crank-shaft 1 is connected with the usual thrust shaft 2 by a coupling 5 which permits relative axial movement of the shafts, instead of by the usual rigid coupling. In this manner the natural period of axial vibration of the shaft 1 will normally not synchronise with the periods of oscillation of other members of the plant. A thrust bearing 6 is provided for the shaft 1. Any flywheel to be employed should preferably be secured to the thrust shaft 2.
