Abstract
578,972. Wrenches. STEVENS, A. H. (Byron Jackson Co.). April 13, 1944, No. 6845. [Class 61 (iii)] A pipe tongs adapted for use with a wide range of drill pipe, drill collars and casing comprises two series of jointed jaw segments pivoted to the driving lever, each series having one jaw segment adapted to be pivoted at a number of selective points to an adjacent segment of the series and latch means for connecting the two series. In, the construction shown, the pairs of gripping segments 1, 5 and 10, 12 are pivoted at 2, 11 to the lever 3, the segments 5, 12 terminating respectively in arms 20, 30 each with a range of pivot holes for the pins 4, 13 connecting them to the forked ends of the other jaw segments 1, 10. The latch 6 carries a projection 17 adapted to , engage any one of the shoulders 14, 15, 16 on the segment 12.
