[Class 146 (ii)] For securing the overlapping ends of straps or bands used for securing bales, boxes, &c., a number of interlocking joints or other unions are formed successively in one operation between the overlapping ends, the band being severed from the supply before the final interlocking joint is formed. In the machine shown, one end of the band is held by a gripper 19 operated by a lever 20 and the free or top end of the band is gripped between tensioning rolls 22, 23, one of which can be rotated by a ratchet operated by a lever 28, and the other 23 is mounted in eccentric bearings operable by a lever 25 to release the grip. The overlapping ends of the band are operated by means of male and female dies to form interlocking tongues between the overlapping ends as described in Specification 508,906. The female die 3 acts in advance of the female die 4 which forms two sets of interlocking tongues, and the dies 3, 4 are operated by intergeared eccentrics 8, 9, operated by levers 14, 15 or by power to lower the die 3 before the die 4. A cutter 16 moves with the die 4 and acts to cut off the end of the strip when a continuous strip is employed, and is timed to act after the die 3 and before the die 4. Other forms of fastening such as seals may be employed, and the die 3 may form two fastenings and the die 4 only one, or other variations may be used.
