Abstract

578,664. Generating high - frequency oscillations. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (International Standard Electric Corporation). Feb. 15, 1944, No. 2773. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A spark-gap system for short-wave wireless transmission comprises two shunted spark-gaps in series connection, the first comprising a single gap in parallel with an ohmic impedance, and the second a multiple gap shunted by a capacitance. The shunting impedances may be structurally combined with the spark-gaps and the combined system may operate in vacuo or under increased pressure. The simple spark-gap comprising the hemispherical electrodes 1, 2, is connected in series with the multiple-plate gap comprising the electrodes 13 separated by insulating washers 12. The electrodes 1, 2 are enclosed by a tube 6 which may be composed of resistive material, or alternatively of insulating material with the shunting resistive material deposited upon it. The electrodes 13 are shunted-by the capacitance comprising the cylindrical elements 20, 21, separated by the dielectric material 19. The arrangement is enclosed in a container comprising the conducting end-plates 5, 9 and the tubular insulator 11, compressed air being introduced via the duct 3 in the electrode 1, and flowing through the ducts 14, 15 to the outlet 4.
