Abstract

578,258. Galvanic batteries. PURVES, R., and LINDLEY, P. H. Feb. 12, 1932, No. 4196. [Class 53] [Also in Groups XXI and XXXVII] A fuse arrangement for fixing floatable bombs, mines &c., controlled by hydrostatic switches and horn contacts is energised by a battery comprising zinc and carbon electrodes and a bichromatec electrolyte contained in a bottle which fractures when the bomb strikes the water. A guided weight ensures fracture. In a modification, the battery is normally inert and is filled with sea water electrolyte through an opening normally closed by a rubber valve 79 on a flap 81 held by a tripper 83. The tripper is released by striking the water and the flap is subsequently retained closed by the hydrostatic pressure until the bomb ascends when it is opened by a spring 80.
