Abstract

[Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft is equipped with an I.C. engine 11 driving an airscrew and a jet-propulsion unit 12. These operate as independent sources of power when the aircraft is flying below a certain altitude and, above that altitude, the turbocompressor of the jet-propulsion unit is energised by the exhaust gases of the I.C. engine and is used to supercharge it. The I.C. engine control-lever 17 operates the throttle 20. The jet unit control-lever 21 controls the loading of a governor 23 which through a relay 24 controls the fuel valve 26. In the condition shown, the jet unit is acting as a supercharger. The air inlet for the I.C., engine 35 is closed by a valve 37 which has opened a duct 31 leading from the jet unit compressor. The normal exhaust 39 for the I.C. engine is closed by a valve 43 which opens a duct 41 by which the exhaust is led to the combustion chambers 14 of the jet unit. Linkage from the valve 43 causes a dash-pot 69 to close an overriding fuel valve 65 so that, as shown, the jet unit is regulated from the governor 23 by means of an I.C. exhaust escape valve 63. The change-over is effected by a control lever 44 which is interlocked with the levers 17, 21 so that it can be moved only when the latter are in appropriate positions. In the first part of its movement, because of lostmotion at 25 the lever 21 only moves the jet unit air scoop 60 into the full line position.
