Abstract

577,746. Cooling radiators for aircraft and motor vehicles. COLTMAN, J. L., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 19, 1943, No. 985. [Class 64 (iii)] In a radiator of the kind comprising a matrix of thin sheet metal or tubular elements with header tanks attached thereto, a header plate 5 consists of a rectangular frame with an aperture corresponding with the cross-section of the matrix, the side elements 8 of which are stepped back, the spaces 9 thus formed constituting subsidiary header compartments. Channel-section members 10 forming the outer side walls of the subsidiary headers are brazed to the reflexed edges 12 of the header plate and to end plates 15 provided to protect the side elements of the matrix. The header cover plate 6 is formed with an outwardly-directed turn-over 6a which is secured by brazing in the rim 5a of the header plate. Corrugated reinforcing members 17 are secured by brazing or welding to the inner surface of the cover plate.
