Abstract

A medicated bandage or gauze is prepared by impregnating tulle, gauze &c. with a mucilage containing a cellulose derivative, e.g., methylcellulose, sulphanilamide or a derivative thereof such as sulphanilamido-pyridine or sulphanilamido-thiazole, and an alkali, e.g., sodium bisulphite or metabisulphite to act as a stabilizer. The presence of the stabilizer permits subsequent sterilization without discoloration. The mucilage may be applied to a wide openmesh gauze by spreading or spraying, and then dried off by heating leaving a translucent film in which the gauze is embedded.
