Abstract
Trifluoroacetic acid, monochlordifluoroacetic acid and difluoracetic acid are prepared by reacting halogen substituted ethylenic compounds of the formula CF2X-CY = CYZ in which Y and Z are chlorine or hydrogen and X is hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine, with an alkali metal permanganate and an alkali metal hydroxide in aqueous solution. Unreacted ethylenic compound is distilled off from the reaction mixture which is then neutralised or acidified and the fluoracetic acid or salt is separated by distillation or evaporation and extraction with a solvent-like ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, secondary butyl alcohol or diethyl ether. In the examples: (1) 1.1.2-trichlor 3.3.3-trifluorpropene-1 is reacted with potassium permanganate and sodium hydroxide and trifluoroacetic acid is separated from the reaction product; (2) 1.1.2.3-tetrachloro 3.3-difluoropropene-1 is reacted similarly to give monochloro-difluoro-acetic acid; (3) 1.2-dichloro-3.3-difluoropropene-1 is reacted similarly to give difluoroacetic acid; (4) 3.3.3-trifluoropropene-1, potassium hydroxide and potassium permanganate are reacted together to give trifluoroacetic acid.
