Abstract

576,588. Hydrolising titanium chloride solutions. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. Sept 27, 1943, No. 15838. Convention date, Sept 25, 1942. [Class 1 (iii)] In the hydrolysis of a titanium tetrachloride solution by introducing a comparatively concentrated solution thereof into a volume of hot or boiling water at a slow rate to form colloidal nuclei which serve as seed during the hydrolysis under heat, the concentration of the chloride solution and the ratio of solution to water are such as to yield after hydrolysis a constant boiling hydrochloric acid. Using a solution containg 290 grams per litre of titanium calculated as TiO2 the ratio of solution to water is substantially 1:1. The solution may be added to the water at a uniform rate over a period of 10 minutes to one hour, or a part, say one-fifth may be added in five minutes, and the balance then be added over a period of five to ten minutes. The solution may be at a temperature of 25-65‹C., and the water is preferably maintained at or near 100‹C. during the addition. Rutile pigments are obtained by calcining at 800‹C. the washed precipitated titanium dioxide. Specification 550,995 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, is not limited to carrying out the process under conditions detailed above, but only to the correlation of the solution concentration and its rate of addition to water to ensure seeding during the hydrolysis.
