Abstract
575,532. Aircraft. JEWETT, G. P. March 22, 1944, No. 5350. [Class 4] An aircraft comprises a streamlined cargo container or passenger compartment 10 detachably secured to the.underside of a flying unit comprising an airframe with monoplane wing 1 and twin tail booms 3 supporting an empenage 5, crew's quarters 2, engines 4 and undercarriage, the flying unit being capable of flight with or without the container or compartment. The main points of attachment are preferably disposed in a transverse vertical plane containing or lying close to the centres of gravity of the container and flying unit, in order that containers may be interchanged without materially affecting the trim of the aircraft. The undercarriage may be retractable and comprise fourlanding wheels, the rear wheels 8 being disposed to the rear of, and the front wheels 9 to the front of, the centre of gravity of the machine. Detachable streamlined fairings may be provided for attachment to the ends of the container, which may be of rectangular cross-section and provided with landing wheels or skids, or a planing bottom for alighting on water. A boat may be attached to the flying unit.
