Abstract

574,844. Electron discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). May 27, 1943, No. 8528. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An electronic discharge device producing high-frequency oscillations includes a photocathode which is illuminated intermittently to produce a periodic functioning of the discharge device. For example, a spark gap 30, 31 operated intermittently by a coil 35 and condenser 33 produces a powerful and very rapidly intermittent light which passes through a perforated tubular anode 12 and a grid 11 and falls on a cathode 10 composed of an antimony and caesium coating deposited on a nickel base. The emission of photo-electrons causes the valve to function in circuit 18 and high-frequency oscillations are emitted. This photo-cathode illuminated by a spark gap may also be used in a velocity modulation tube as described in Specification 544,850 or in a magnetron.
