Abstract

574,813. Saws. RONAN, L. F. June 17, 1943, No. 9762. [Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Group II] In high speed metal-cutting saw blades comprising a single piece of high speed steel such as a tungsten-chromium-vanadium or a molybdenum - tungsten - vanadium steel, the flexibility of the blade is increased by forming a longitudinal portion of the blade situated away from the toothed edge softer than the toothed edge but not less hard than approximately C35 Rockwell, or by removing small portions of the blade such as by perforations. In one form, Fig. 2, the whole blade after being hardened, e.g. by heating from about 2175‹ F. to 2400‹ F. and quenching in air or oil, is tempered by heating from about 900‹ F. to 1120‹ F. to bring the teeth to the desired hardness. A longitudinal zone lying between lines 12, 13 near to the inner ends of the teeth and near the back edge respectively, or the whole of the portion between the line 12 and the back edge is then heat treated, while protecting the teeth from the heat, until such zone or back portion has a hardness of from C35 to C58 Rockwell. In addition to or instead of this heat treatment, the blade may be provided with one or more rows of perforations 14, Fig 3, or slots, or the back edge 24 of the blade may be of sinuous form as in Fig. 9.
