574,578. Tyre valves. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., POWELL, E. F., and BADHAM, P. W. Feb. 2, 1943, No. 1692. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] A tubeless pneumatic tyre 3 is sealed by air pressure deforming the sides 1b of an inflatable annulus 1 against the tyre insides, the annulus 1 having an inextensible outer wall periphery 1d having at least one air inlet or non-return valve 8, the inner wall periphery 1a of the annulus seating on the rim and having an inflation opening to the inflation tube 5 and with the usual inflation valve. The side walls 1b carry sealing coatings of plastic non-drying or tacky material, e.g. a mixture of reclaimed rubber, whiting, clay, &c., and held in place by circumferential ribs 1c. The outer periphery 1d of the annulus 1 is made circumferentially inextensible by cords 9 and/or fabric, the cords being held in position by rubber so that they can spread apart transversely. A spring- pressed, non-return valve 6 allows air to pass from the annulus to the tyre after the edges have been sealed by deformation. Fig. 2 shows a combined inflation and release valve in which inflation flattens the rubber cup 11d over the ports 11c and so distends the sides 1b to seal the tyre. Further inflation raises the disc 11g against its spring 11e and allows air to enter, the tyre. Opening the external inflation valve (not shown) allows complete deflation.
