Abstract

573,464. Automatic guns. TEMPLE, G., SHEPHERD, R. V., and TURPIN, H. J. April 17, 1941, No. 5020. [Class 119] Relates to automatic guns of the type in which the backward thrust of the gun gases on the cartridge case causes opening movement of the breech bolt which is returned by a spring to load and fire the gun. According to the invention, the firing-pin is formed integral with a breech bolt having a removable cocking-handle normally retained in position by one or more convolutions of the bolt return spring. Further, this spring is provided with a rear abutment which acts as a retaining catch for a removable butt for the gun. The invention is shown applied to a " Sten " gun having a trigger-mechanism as in Specification 573,462 and a barrel mounting as in Specification 573,463. The breech bolt D, which has an integral firing-pin D<2>, is held in the open cocked position shown against the action of the return spring D<1> by a pivoted sear engaging a projection on the bolt. The forward end of the return spring engages over a reduced spigot D<8> on the bolt and over a shoulder D'‹ on the cocking handle D‹ detachably mounted in a radial recess in the bolt. The rear end of the return spring engages a cup-shaped member A<6> which bears against a ring A<7> fastened to the open end of the gun casing A by a bayonet joint. The button A<3> at the rear end of the cap engages a hole in the butt plate C to lock the butt after it has been attached by a turning movement to engage the casing at A<4> and the trigger housing at C<3>. The breech bolt carries a pivoted extractor D<5> engagement of which with the cartridge case is facilitated by providing a flared recess B<9> at the rear of the gun chamber. The horizontal ejector G engaging a slot D<4> in the bolt is formed as part of the catch which retains a magazine inserted into a casing at the side of the gun.
