Abstract

573,172. Protective cut-out arrangements. COMPAGNIE POUR LA FABRICATION DES COMPTEURS ET MATERIEL D'USINES A GAS. June 7, 1940, No. 9977. Convention date, June 13, 1939. [Class 38 (v)] Differential protective systems of the circulating-current or opposed voltage type, for line-sections or machines, and employing saturable transformers for limiting the throughfault current, are prevented from operation by differences, due to such saturation, in wave-form of the secondary currents delivered to the pilot circuit, by non-saturable chokes in the secondary circuits, which chokes have for effect the avoidance of " peaked " waves. The transformers may be the line currenttransformers or, as shown, auxiliary transformers with unequal secondaries to give protection also against interphase faults, and are saturable. Applications to simple circuits and to an alternator are described, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), also to the disconnection of all of three lines connected to a busbar set, Fig. 6 (not shown), but in Fig. 7 selective disconnection of any of three lines 1, 1a, 1b connected to common bars can be obtained. Currenttransformer groups 2, 2a, 2b in the lines are each connected to auxiliary saturable transformers 6, 6a, 6b, the secondaries of which are connected in series with non-saturable chokes 7, 7a, 7b across resistances 5, 5a, 5b connected in star on one side. The relays 4, 4a, 4b are mesh-connected to the free ends of the resistances and provided with two sets of contacts, connected to the starting coils of circuit-breakers 15 in the lines. If a fault occurs in, say, line 1, the potential of the free end of the resistance 5 changes with respect to that of the other free ends, relays 4, 4b operate, and trip out the faulty line. The line 1, Fig. 8 has interposed in the pilot circuit 27, which may be subjected to high induced voltages, a pair of insulating transformers 26, the mid points of the secondaries of which are earthed.
