Abstract
572,996. Filters. TECALEMIT, Ltd., and' LE CLAIR, C. C. S. Feb. 24, 1943, No. 3063. [Class 46] In a filter comprising a number of bobbin-like hollow elements 22 each consisting of a central perforated tube 23 carrying between end flanges 27, 28 a cylindrical mass of filtering material 30, the lower ends of the tubes 23 are closed and their upper ends communicate with the interior of a header 16 to which the elements are secured, the header 16 being removably held on a central hollow boss 6 on a removable filter head 2 containing inlet and outlet passages 13, 5, with the latter of which the passage 5 in the boss 6 communicates. In the construction shown the elements 22 are arranged in a ring, in contact with one another, and the lower ends of the tubes 23 are closed by fitting into depressions in. a plate 25 with a central hole for the upward passage of the liquid. The: head 2 is secured by a plug 4 which closes the outlet passage 5 and is screwed on to a central rod 3. the lower end of this rod being screwed into a hollow spigot 7 through which the liquid may be drained from the container by slackening back or removing: a ported plug 10. The header 16 is pressed against a sealing ring: 16A on the boss 6 by a sleeve 18 forced upwardly by a spring 17, and having a flared end which. bears on a sealing ring 21. The header and filtering elements 22 form a removable unit. The filtering elements shown comprise a cylinder 29 of wire gauze around the central tube 23, on which is arranged the filtering material 30, consisting for example, of a cotton or wool strand wound criss-cross in helical form. A helix of wire may be arranged between the tube 23 and the gauze cylinder 29, and the latter may be replaced by a tube of other permeable material, such as woven fabric or coarse bonded granular material. The filtering material 30 may consist of a winding of several layers of fabric, of granular or powdered material in a tubular textile or woven metallic sac which is helically wound on the element, or of granular material retained in position by an admixed adhesive or an external woven covering. The filtering material may increase in fineness in the direction of flow of the liquid through it, for which purpose layers of fabric of different fineness may be used.
