Abstract

572,899. Filtering media. JOHNSON & JOHNSON (GREAT BRITAIN), Ltd. April 16, 1943, No. 6132. Convention date, April 18, 1942. [Class 46] A filter pad which may be placed in a metal strainer on the top of a milk can comprises a soft and flexible sheet-like structure of loosely associated fibres, e.g., carded cotton, in which the surface fibres are bonded by means of a bonding agent applied in very dilute solution with subsequent drying, only the fibres at or near the surface being bonded and these only at the points of contact, the bonds in the final state being non-dispersible' in cold water. This leaves the interior fibres and the interstices between the surface fibres free so that liquid can filter therethrough while the bonding prevents displacement of the fibres whereby holes might be formed through the pad by the eddying liquid. Various bonding agents including artificial resins, gums, starch, alginates, silicates, rubber, shellac, glue, casein, gelatin, albumen, are described some of which are soluble in water but after drying become non-dispersible in cold water.
