Abstract

572,840. Cockpit hoods. MALCOLM, Ltd., R., and LOBELLE, M. J. O. June 28, 1943, No. 10470. [Class 108 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A hood for the cockpit of an aeroplane, land vehicle, speedboat, or the like, which may be jettisoned in an emergency, comprises bottom rails 16 which slidably engage runners 17, the latter being provided with projecting studs 18 which normally engage with the horizontal portions of L-shaped openings 23 formed in fixed rails 19. Release mechanism for the hood comprises a lever 27 at the side of the cockpit connected by means of rods 31, 39 and a cross-tube 36 to pawls 34, 38, engaging recesses in the runners 17. Movement of the lever 27 rotates the pawls to disengage the studs 18 of the runners 17 from the slots 23. An inflatable tube may be fitted along the edges of the hood to provide an air-tight joint.
