Abstract

572,807. Thermostats. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd., and HURST, W. F. F. MARTIN-. May 13, 1943, Nos. 7628/43 and 5364/44. [Class 64 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a thermostatic valve or switch having means to move it to a safe position in the event of failure of the thermal element, the actuating bellows 7, containing a volatile liquid, is associated with a second charged bellows 12 which normally does not move, but if the bellows 7 fails through leakage, the bellows 12 releases a locking device which allows a spring to move the valve or switch. In an application to a control valve 5 for the oil cooling system of an internal combustion engine, the bellows 7 is secured to a plate 8 carried by the valve 5, and to a sleeve 9 carried by a fixed cup 10 enclosing a second bellows 12 which is rigidly connected to the cup by a plate 13. The lower end of the bellows 12 carrying a plate 14 is free to move in the cup 10. The bellows 7 is charged with volatile liquid through opening 18 and the space 10a external to bellows 12 is charged with similar liquid through opening 19. The two bellows communicate internally through openings 16, so that bellows 12 is normally balanced. A plate 15 carried by cup 10 carries a sleeve 20 over which a sleeve 21 is adapted to move, but is normally locked thereto by a number of balls 23 which are held by rod 25 carried, through flexible coupling 26, by plate 14. If leakage of bellows 7 occurs, pressure falls within both bellows, and pressure in chamber 10a lifts rod 25 until recessed portion 25a releases the balls 23 from locking position and allows spring 22 to move valve 5 upward. A modification is described, Fig. 3 not shown, including an additional bellows which compensates for variations in atmospheric pressure, but is punctured by the safety device upon failure of the main bellows. Specification 505,360 is referred to.
