Abstract

572,200. Machines for needling fibrous batts. UNSWORTH. T. A. April 12, 1943, No. 5832. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1942. [Class 42 (ii)] A machine for needling a travelling fibrous batt A includes opposed sets of needles 35, means for advancing the batt between the sets of needles, means for reciprocating the needle into and out of the batt and means for guiding the reciprocating movement so that when the needles are inserted into the batt and when being withdrawn therefrom they will be moved also in the direction of advancement of the batt. The batt A is brought to the needling machine by a conveyer apron 47 and may be treated by water &c. sprays from nozzles 55, 56 on its way through feeding rollers 48, 50 to adjustable racks 51, 52 comprising spaced bars 51b, 52b between which the needles operate. The needles 35 are carried by beams 33, 34 and are operated by adjustable cranks and connecting rods 25, 27, pivoting about bolts 37 linked to the machine frame by adjustable links 40, the cranks &c. being driven by a motor 70. Needles 65 carried by levers 67 pivoted at 68 and operated by connecting rods 69 remove any fibres which may cling to the lower set of needles 35. The arrangement of the needle linkages is such that whilst the needles 35 enter, pass through and withdraw from the batt they are moved with the batt at substantially the same speed, but when completely retracted from the batt they are moved in the opposite direction, the interlaced fibres moving finally from off the needle hooks due to the motion of the batt. The batt may comprise outer layers of softer and firmer fibres and the needling may be effected by pusher needles with barbs or fish-tail ends. From the batt-supporting plate 78, the needled batt is delivered by rollers 57, 58.
