[Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] A governor for a prime mover manually adjustable to different speeds over a wide range comprises a fluid-circulating pump 1, Fig. 2, a speed-sensitive member such as an aperture 6 in the pump circuit exerting a pressure varying approximately as the square of the speed of the prime mover which in this form drives the pump, means for exerting a force under manual control independent of the speed and torque of the prime mover, e.g. an adjustable spring 9 acting on a valve 8 in the pump return circuit, and pressure sensitive means as the loaded piston 13 responsive to the sum of the two forces and operatively connected to the torquecontrolling member of the prime mover. Fig. 3 shows apparatus in which the pump 1 is independently driven and the speed-sensitive member is a rotary impeller 6a giving a back pressure proportional to the square of the velocity. The impeller may be replaced by a rotary valve, this valve and the impeller being driven by the prime mover. Specifications 529,760 and 555,630 are referred to.
