Abstract

571,397. Sewing machines for spiral wound tubing. DEHN, F. B. (Spiral Bagging Machine Corporation). Nov. 20, 1943, No. 8017. [Class 112] Sheet textile material from a roll 43, Fig. 6, is drawn by pairs of feed-rollers 74 to pass around a stationary mandrel comprising rods 84, 85, 86, the material being overlapped and stitched together by a needle 57 and passing off the mandrel to a roller 105, Fig. 3, to be again rolled up. The perimeter of the mandrel may be varied by adjusting links 94 through a slide handle 97, Fig. 2. The motor 51 drives the needle and looper or shuttle, Fig. 9, and since the usual feed dog may be dispensed with, power is transmitted laterally around the edge of the sheeting from the upper to the lower mechanism, the usual support column for the sewing- machine being omitted. The motor also drives the pairs of chain-coupled rollers 74, the apparatus for winding off the tubing, and tensioning rollers for the material. An I-beam 33 is supported on a number of pedestals, and carries an L- beam 34 through intermediate supports. The material is fed over a table 39, Fig. 2, the edges being guided by any means. Photo-electric cell units may be used. Tensioning bars 44 are mounted on stub shafts 45, 46, in a frame 38, and together may be rotated by an end-wheel and locked in position. The material passes over a fixed rod 50 and between bars 44. The upper feed rollers 74 are supported from the frame 34, Fig. 5, while the lower idler rollers have each a shaft which is spring-pressed upwards. The top mandrel bars 84 are supported on cross-members 87, Fig. 2, and bars 85 are supported from the beam 33 by cross-bars 88 having pivoted rods 89 connected to further rods 90. The rods 86 are supported as shown in Fig. 19 and have counterweights 92. As the tubular material leaves the mandrel it is passed over a bar 102, which is freely rotatable on a shaft 101 and elongated, Figs. 3 and 5, before being passed between a pair of rollers 104 in a rotatable frame 103 and is finally wound round a roller 105 driven by means of a slip clutch mechanism which includes a pulley 106 and clutch plates 107. The spider frame 103 is mounted on a shaft 116, journalled in a pedestal 117, and has a wheel 118 which enables the spider to be turned by an operator, and also the roller 105, the slip clutch mechanism compensating for the variation in angular speed of the roller, as the roll of material increases. In a modified form of winding apparatus, Fig. 21, the rollers 104 are replaced by knurled rollers 131, 136, geared together. The wheel 118 is connected with the frame 103 by a sleeve 125. The rollers 131, 136 are rotated from a shaft 122 through gearing as shown. The bearings of roller 136 are supported in angularly adjustable brackets 137, 138, through a handle 140 and a screwed stem 139 which is movable in a slot in the frame. Shaft 122 is driven by the motor 51.
