Abstract
570,465. Engine turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 29, 1943, No. 16014. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1942. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter adapted to rotate a member of the engine when a motor, energized by the starting circuit moves a pinion to engage the member, mechanically actuated means positively hold the pinion in engagement with the member until the starting circuit is de-energized. A tubular shaft 8 mounted on the shaft 7 of the starting motor to rotate therewith drives, through a torsion spring 11, a screwed shaft 9 journalled on the tubular shaft 8. On starting the motor by closing a press-button 4, a nut 12 runs down the screwed shaft 9, compressing a light return spring 13, until checked by a stop 14 on the shaft 8, whereupon a casing 15 secured to the nut and provided with an overrunning clutch 17 moves a pinion 18 into engagement with a pinion 19 on the engine. At or near the end of its traverse, a latch 21 on the nut 12 drops into a notch 24 on the screwed shaft 9 and prevents reverse movement of the nut. Normally, the latch is maintained in an inoperative position by a spring-pressed plunger 26, but when the press-button 4 is depressed, a solenoid 27 in the starter circuit withdraws the plunger 26 from the latch and keeps it away until the starter circuit is de-energized.
