570,449. Ampoules. BAYER PRODUCTS, Ltd., WATSON, E. D., and HACKETT, W. H. Aug. 28, 1943, No. 14081. [Class 81 (i)] In an ampoule of the type comprising two chambers in which two substances are isolated and may be mixed when required for use by mani. pulation of the ampoule, the end of one chamber 2 is closed by a resilient closure member, e.g., a plug 5 of natural or synthetic rubber, and the other chamber 1 has a neck 9 received in the closure member, the latter sealing the end of the neck to form a valve adapted to be opened to afford communication between the chambers. A hole may extend centrally through the plug and the open end 9<1> of the neck may be directed laterally to be sealed by the surface of an enlarged portion 8 of the hole. The plug may be protected from the action of the substance in the upper chamber by a lining of foil or the like on its interior surface. When the upper chamber contains a liquid, the lower chamber may be evacuated after the ampoule has been put together by forcing a hollow needle through the plug as at 10, and sucking out air. After withdrawal of the needle, the hole may be sealed for example by a coating of cellulose. In a modification the neck end 9<1> is sealed and is broken by movement of the upper chamber. The chambers may be made of glass. metal or plastic material.
