570,372. Charging and discharging machines for furnaces. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd., and NEWMAN, F. S. April 14, 1943, No. 6006. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] Machines for handling slabs and the like and generally having a peel mounted on a carriage for moving it in and out of a furnace, are provided in combination with the peel with a pivoted member and means for moving it from a horizontal to a vertical position so as to support the slab, there being a plurality of peels with pivoted members in the spaces between and common driving means is used to move the peels to and fro and to raise and lower the pivoted members. A set of peels 11, for example, four, are fixed on the front of a pan-like carriage 1 supported by wheels 8 running on rails 9 on a structure 2 which can be lifted and lowered by a motor on a trolley running on rails on overhead girders and moved by a cross-traverse motor in lengthwise directions of the carriage J. The front end of the peels slopes down and backwards as shown at 12 and between them on a shaft 13 fixed in the carriage are pivoted frame members 14, carrying rollers 15, 16 and linked at 18 to racks 19 sliding in the framework 7 of the carriage 1 and meshing with pinions 26 on a shaft 20 having a central pinion 21 driven by a motor 22 on the carriage 1. Pinions 23 on the shaft 20 engage racks 24 on the structure and thus the peels 11 can be run forward under the slabs in the furnace, the structure 2 then raised by the overhead trolley engine to pick up the slabs which then tilt on to the support frames 14, the carriage can be retracted to withdraw the peels with the slabs, the supports at the same time folding back by means of the links 18 and racks 19 to lay the slabs upon rollers for removal. Separate gear trains 34, 35 may be employed to drive pinion 21 ; the meshing gear of trains 34 being loose on its shaft 36 and a slip clutch 37 being provided so as to allow forward and rearward motion of the carriage and peels to continue as required after the raising and lowering of the members 14 has been completed.
