Abstract
569,981. Locking rods. MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd., (formerly PHILLIPS & POWIS AIRCRAFT, Ltd.), and HOPKINS, F. T. Aug. 11, 1943, No. 13012. [Class 80 (iii)] A rod 3 is locked to a member 1 by balls 8 located in longitudinal flutings 9 formed either in a conical bore 2 of the member 1 or in the shaft 3. The flutings are of part cylindrical formation in cross-section. The balls 8 are urged to locking position by a spring-pressed sleeve 4 slidable on the shaft and which may be splined to either member 1 or 3. The balls may be caged, and the cage may form part of the sleeve 4. The part 1 or 3 not having the flutings may have an annular groove to provide positive looking. Means may be provided to prevent relative rotation of the parts 1, 3, 4. To release the lock the sleeve 4 is moved against the action of its spring 6. Such movement may be effected by an electrical solenoid.
