Abstract
In the method of manufacturing guanidine nitrate by fusing ammonium nitrate and dicyandiamide purification, steps are introduced for removing melamine and iron impurities, the former by precipitating melamine nitrate from solution with nitric acid, and the latter by converting any ferrous iron to ferric by aeration and precipitating with an alkali. These steps form the basis for a cyclic operation as follows: the ammonium nitrate, dicyandiamide fusion product is dissolved in water or the mother liquor from a previous cycle. Iron is removed from the solution in the above manner and guanidine nitrate crystallized out. The mother liquor is treated with nitric acid to remove melamine and then either returned to the cycle as a solvent for the ammonium nitrate, dicyandiamide fusion product, or evaporated to dryness to produce a crude solid ammonium nitrate which may then be added direct to the fusion pot.
