Abstract

<PICT:0569143/IV/1> Liquid fed by atomizers or distributers against the wall of a jacketed distillation or reaction chamber 1, flows down as a very thin film to an outlet 9. Gas, steam or other vapour reactant entering by a pipe 6 issues through nozzles or perforations in a helical pipe 5 caused to rotate so that the jets are projected in continuously changing directions into turbulent contact with the liquid. By imparting an upward or downward inclination to the nozzles the liquid flow may be retarded or accelerated. Vapours pass off to a condenser 14. The reaction chamber may be of inverted frustro-conical shape, the reduction in diameter corresponding with the reduced volume of liquid being distilled. Treatments described comprise the de-acidification of olive oil, the reduction by hydrogen of cinnamic aldehyde in presence of nickel to cinnamic alcohol and phenyl-propylic alcohol, and the oxidation of an alcoholic solution of cinnamic aldehyde to cinnamic acid by treatment with oxygen.
