569,014. Indicating apparatus. MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd., (formerly PHILLIPS & POWIS AIRCRAFT, Ltd.), and TREU, J. F. May 14, 1943, No. 7741. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XXX] An indicating device for operative connection with a winding drum for a cable, to indicate the length of cable paid out from and remaining on the drum, comprises a pointer movable over a scale and actuated from the drum through a disconnectable coupling member and a compensating linkage t6 correct the drive for changing drum diameter of the cable as it is paid out or wound in. As applied to a target towing cable and drum as described in Specification 569,015, [Group XXX], the cable traverse laying-on gear is connected to a flexible cable 1 which, through worm gearing 2, 3, drives the first element 4 of a conical clutch 4, 6 the parts being held in operative engagement by a coil spring 7. The element 6 has a pin 18 that is connected by a link 17 to an arm 16 mounted on an eccentric portion of a shaft 8 which arm carries the indicating pointer 13 and thus provides an indirect drive to achieve the desired compensation. The front of the casing 9 enclosing the drive mechanism has a composite dial mounted for rotation by a bezel 10. The dial has two calibrated scales 14, 15 one for the amount of cable paid out and the other for the amount of cable remaining on the drum. A spring-loaded brake 21 with a manual lever 22 serves to lock the bezel in its adjusted position. A control knob 12 on the spindle 8 can be pushed inwardly to disconnect the clutch elements when the pointer 13 is to be re-set.
