Abstract

568,481. Crank chambers; cylinders; valve gear. INCE, T. A. Oct. 29, 1943, No. 17908. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (v-i)] In a single-cylinder engine, the lower portions of push rods 21, 22 for the valves, a cam-shaft 16 operating the push rods, an, intermediate shaft 14 geared to the cam-shaft; and the crank-shaft 5 are all disposed in a common vertical plane. As shown, the crank-pin 11 extends between a crank 10 on the crank-shaft 5 and a crankarm 15 on the shaft 14 which, with the cam-shaft 16 is carried in a casing 3 bolted to the crank-case and itself supporting a bracket 25 for a magneto 24 coaxial with and driven from the cam-shaft. Outside the valve guides, the push-rods 21, 22 are twisted to operate overhead sideby-side valves 33 disposed in a separate cylinder head 29 formed of an aluminium alloy and having a recess on its underside to accommodate a cast-iron liner 32 which terminates short of the lower face of the head to provide a seating for the top of the cylinder 28. On the cylinder a cooling jacket 60 is forced against a junk ring 65 by a gland nut 69 on the lower part of the cylinder, a triangular section packing 67 ensuring a tight joint. The cooling jacket extends through an elbow connection to a casing surrounding the exhaust pipe.
